A Quiet Time with God

AdminPrayer

The purpose of having A Quiet Time with God

is for Christians to study the Bible, talk to God, listen to God and to do what God is calling us to do. It is important for us to remember that II Corinthians 5:9 states that “Our only goal is to please God whether we live here or there (heaven).”

The Bible says the following about each Christian spending time with God:
  • Joshua 1:8 – Meditation on God’s Word is important
  • Luke 5:16 – Many times Jesus spent time alone in prayer
  • II Timothy 2:7 – God will give us insights into the Scriptures
The best time for us to spend with God is:

when we are awake, alert, alone, and ready to be with God.  It should be daily in a place where we are comfortable and we will not be interrupted (turn off the cell phones and turn on the answering machine).

Creating a Sacred Place

In Terry Tekyl’s book “How to Pray After You’ve Kicked the Dog” (pages 127-29), he writes about creating of a Sacred Place, a special place of stillness, an altar in our homes.  This Sacred Place will provide a refuge from the distractions surrounding us and allow us the opportunity of having sacred moments with God.  This place may be as simple as a favorite chair in a corner, a bench in a garden or a table by a window.  Or you may be able to create your Sacred Place in a small room, an attic or basement.  Regardless, it will be special because it will be the sacred point at which you meet with God.

Once you have established a location for your Sacred Place, give some thought to what things you might put in your Sacred Place.  For example, you might want to include a Bible, a candle as a reminder of the Holy Spirit and a cross as a reminder of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Many people include photos of family members, a list of unsaved friends, a favorite devotional book, a list of scripture verses, Christian pictures & sayings, flowers or plants that signify God’s creation, a comfortable chair, a desk for writing and a Spiritual Journal to write down anything you think God might be saying to you.

When you go to your Sacred Place, go there with faith, believing that God will meet you.  He wants to have a relationship with you, and He will be eager to have your attention. When you are with God you may want to do the following:

  • Ask God to speak to me through God’s Word

  • Read God’s Word (one may want to start with the book of John)
  • Reflect on God’s Word and then write in my Spiritual Journal such reflections:
    • What was this passage about for the people of biblical times?
    • What do I hear, smell, see, taste and/or feel?
    • What does this passage mean to me?
    • What does this passage say to me?
    • What am I going to do about what this passage is saying to me?

  • Prayer (A.C.T.S. of Prayer)
    • Praise God – Adoration
    • Confess to God – Confession
    • Thank God – Thanksgiving
    • Requests to God for myself and others – Supplication
  • Listen for God’s voice and his message to me

  • Record what God is saying to me in my Spiritual Journal

  • Do what God is calling me to do

  • Meet weekly with 1-2 prayer partners for a time of prayer and accountability
